You don’t need to travel far to experience breathtaking nature. There is some right on your doorstep, just outside the city! I warmly recommend a trip to Ruissalo to explore the Finnish outdoors. Ruissalo is an island located south-west of the city centre and it is one of the districts of Turku. The nature on the island is very diverse – there is a beautiful forest with ancient oak trees and of course there is the sea.
To get to Ruissalo Island, you can take bus number 8 from stop T39 at Kauppatori, the market square. When going to the seaside, you should get off at the last bus stop, which is near the campsite. If you want to take a walk through the forest, you can, for example, get off at the bus stop in front of the spa hotel. From there, you can easily get into the forest. The journey takes approximately 20 minutes. To the sea, it takes a bit longer –but you can already enjoy the nature from the bus on the way there 😉
The area by the sea is just stunning! There are several piers that you can sit on to enjoy the view and under the trees, there are some wooden tables with benches. In summer, you can use the facilities provided there to have a barbecue. In addition, you have the chance to go to a sauna. From the beach, it is also possible to watch the cruise ships arriving to or leaving from Turku.
Throughout the forest, there are hiking trails that you can explore. On the way, you have the opportunity to pick some blueberries. To guide you to the berries, there are signs along the hiking trail, so you should look for them. If you are lucky enough, you might even find some mushrooms. Here are some pictures from my trips to Ruissalo. I hope they give you some idea of the spectacular nature there – you really shouldn’t miss this chance to admire the Finnish landscape while in Turku!
